I decided to leave Paraguay earlier than planned as living next to the dual carriageway didn't quite fit into the 'getting away from it all' plan! Plus, I figured I should try and see a little more of South America whilst I'm here!
I had a fun last couple of nights: Beaux and I visited Lilliana´s the local roast chicken place for beer and chicken on the Wednesday, followed up by some beers on the roof - very chilled. On Thursday we all headed to EmpaƱadas, our local bar, for more beer and, unsurprisingly, empaƱadas! Laura then decided to tell us about a little bar/karaoke place near our house (why were we only hearing of this now?) which sounded like a good way to round off the trip. After dropping our bags at the apartment, we walked out the front door and turned left for the first time. I'm not sure why we'd never ventured in this direction before, but we ended the evening all wishing that we had! The local bar turned out to be a huge place and even had pool tables. I played pool (and won) with a couple of locals, whilst Bryony and Cicily took over the karaoke. The place wasn't packed, but there were a few locals singing Spanish songs - which Beaux kindly translated for me...they were supposed to be love songs but something got a little lost in translation! We then all sat around drinking beer and lamenting the fact that we hadn't known this place existed during our time living on Accesso Sur, and that we'd thought we had to trek into town (and hour on the bus) to go out of an evening! Ah well.
As soon as we finished volunteering on Friday (all feeling slightly sleepy after our late night on Thursday) Beaux, Becky, Cicily and I headed to the bus terminal to hop on the next bus to Encarnacion.
After a seven hour bus journey we arrived to find that the hostel we had booked only had really expensive rooms available. We walked around the corner to Hotel Itapua which was slightly cheaper and, after checking in, we soon realised why... The compact rooms seemed ok, but the towel left on the bed looked decidedly unclean, and the sheets felt like they hadn't seen a washing machine in a good while. We headed out for a quick beer at an outdoor bar (I use the term loosely) next to the bus station and then back to the hotel where we managed to lay out our sleeping bags over the bed without really touching it more than we had to!
After a surprisingly good sleep, it was an early start to get the Jesuit ruins...our last excursion in Paraguay.
